![]() ![]() Also AC grid solutions can be combined in different ways with battery solutions. Most ships will have a need for other big power sources, where the vast majority will be produced through AC generators connected to some kind of combustion engines LNG, HFO, diesel, bio or equal. So DC may have a market for ships having its power only from batteries, still depending on a lot of AC technology. No consumer on a ship can use 1000 V DC - unless it is converted via a complex PWM inverter that creates losses and EMC - is rather expensive - and has a limited liftetime. ![]() So where can 1000 V DC be used on a ship ? The answare is : No where - except from the possible connection to a DC battery. ![]() Not to mention power transformers- they are for sure only available in AC execution. DC generators are in fact not available at all. I would like to remind all engineers that the working horse in electric motors and generators, still is the AC -ones, by far.ĭC motors are now very seldom used, due to their cost and major maintenance challange. ![]() 1000 V DC typically, as an alternative to 400 or 690 V AC. Over the past few years, there has been a tendency to belive that the old fashion DC power distribution should be reintroduced on ships. ![]()
